Monetizing Online News Streams from India (Part 1)

This is the first installment of the 2-part series in which we analyze the online news streams from India. The first part will give an overview of the current situation and the second part will look into ways to monetize these streams effectively.

I am a regular viewer of online news streams from IBN, NDTV and DDNews. The online news stream is the exact replica of what is being transmitted nationally in India. The content as well as advertisements from India are carried in the online feed. But I was wondering if the advertisements from India will make any sense to an Indian viewer in UK or Canada.

Alexa Ranking of CNNIBN, NDTV and DDNews on April 8th, 2008

Based on Alexa traffic report (on April 8th, 2008) a significant number of viewers of these sites are from outside India. DD News gets 36% of their viewers outside India. While NDTV gets 44% and IBN gets 49% of their viewers outside India. Here we assume that all the visitors of the website watch online news.

Is there a value of showing Indian advertisements to people who are non-residents of India? Well one thing is for sure that companies can build brand image through these advertisements globally. Apart from that is there any other value in showing these ads to them. What do you think? We have a comparison of these news sites in an earlier post.
