Fully functional website for BCCI in July

Today there was an article in Hindu about a deal between BCCI and an American firm for developing and maintaining websites for the next 10 years for $50 million. The website for Indian Premier League will be launched on April 7th and that for BCCI by July, 2008.

Interestingly, software giants like Microsoft, Wipro and Accenture were bidding for the tender to maintain and operate BCCI website in 2006. Accenture got the deal and bcci.tv is a result of that. Right now visitors of the site are greeted with an official emblem and nothing else. BCCI had launched the partial website in September 2006 for selling tickets for ICC Champions Trophy 2006. They have another website to streamline the posting of umpires and referees in domestic matches.

There is a reason for having a .tv extension instead of .com or .co.in. BCCI was planning to launch a 24 hour TV channel much like NFL (of US) in India. In 2005 a study by Punjab and Rajasthan Cricket Boards said that having a own 24 hour cricket channel will generate revenue of Rs 16,000 crore in 5 years. This will also put an end the tussle over the distribution rights.

There is no official website that gives details about BCCI. The only place where one can get some information on BCCI is in wikipedia. According to the site-

BCCI was founded in 1929. It is a society registered under Tamil Nadu Societies Act. The BCCI often uses government-owned stadiums across the country at a nominal annual rent.

Well its very strange that the richest cricketing body does not have a functional website. I am wondering in this age where having a website is a norm for marketing, how could BCCI not have one. Almost all other nations’ cricket boards are having websites, that includes Pakistan.
