A job fair with difference. The earliest one would be in Delhi on March 27th. They plan to have such a meeting in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad. They have posted really good contents regarding why and why not to work for a startup. Registration is available online.

It will be interesting to know how this initiative takes shape. Prospective employees have lot of questions in mind. And I were to join a start up I will have two questions in mind. Will I get good salary? And the other is, will the company break even? There are some risks involved in working for a startups. Since the risk is higher, rewards ought to be higher. But unfortunately rewards are comparatively lower. All startup employers should be ready to answer this question from prospective employees.

I am losing my opportunity to have better salary and relatively secure job for your startup. What are you giving in return?

Here are some of my thoughts on this subject-

People complain that they do not find quality professionals for their startups. But if one could take cue from the bigger software development firms, invest in training your existing associates. Bigger firms do not always get quality staff. So they train them to achieve the required standards. Training need not be always external. Prepare quality in house training options. Invest some time and money in training in the beginning. Quality of your staff will rise with time.

There is huge opportunity for a staff consulting business for startups. Such companies will follow the same business model of bigger firms like Infosys, Wipro and TCS. The only difference is that such firms will providing consulting (technical and strategy) for startups. The advantage here is that employees will have a secure job with the consulting firm. And the startup firms will get quality associates. Other option is to ink a deal with the big consulting/software firms mentioned above. These software firms provide software services and consulting to the world. Won’t they be able to find a new revenue stream by assisting the upcoming startups?
