Educational sector gets a boost from budget
Compared to previous year, there is a 20% increase in the budget allocation for education. This proves that the government is still committed to improve the educational system. Budget carried more importance to provide elementary and high school education to all children.
More fund will be made available for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (Rs.13,100 crore). Until now the funds were utilized to improve the infrastructure. Now the funds will be used to improve the quality of education. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is Government of India program to achieve Universal Education for all children between the age of 6 and 14. Separate funds is set aside to to develop high quality model schools and upgrade hostel facilities. There is also a scheme to allocate Rs. 750 crore for merit scholarships.
There are plans to start 16 Central Universities, 3 IITs (Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan), 2 IISERs (Bhopal and Tiruvananthapuram) and 2 Schools of Planning and Architecture (Bhopal and Vijayawada). 300 ITIs (Industrial Training Institutes) will be upgraded to deliver quality technical training. Earlier 238 ITIs were being upgraded with assistance from World Bank.
Ministry of Science and Technology will introduce a scheme called Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) that will include scholarships for young learners (10-17 years), scholarships for continuing science education (17-22 years) and opportunities for research careers (22-32 years). This will allow more students to pursue career in Science subjects.
Government has accepted an important recommendation to inter-connect all knowledge institutions through an electronic digital broadband network. It is named as National Knowledge Network
